May 20, 2009: HRPS Night at the Movies

HRPS sponsered a special showing of 5 Against the House at the Sands Hotel and Casino. Filmed in downtown Reno, this 1955 film is about four college friends who plan the perfect heist of Harolds Club. Other Reno locations in the movie include the University of Nevada, the train station, and the old Harolds Club parking lot, which featured an interesting method of retrieving cars. Memorable actors in this film are Guy Madison, Kim Novak, Brian Keith, Alvy Moor, and William Conrad.

April 22, 2009: The Andrews/Crissie Caughlin Ranch, Home to Reno's Pioneering Families

Jennifer Bath, the owner of the Caughlin Ranch House located on Mayberry Drive, presented the history of the ranch along with future plans for this historic property. Family members and Sheila Lonie, the author of Crissie Caughlin – Pioneer, were on hand.

March 25, 2009: How to Do a Property History Using the Recorder's Office

Patty Cafferata, who has had a diverse career as a politician, attorney, historian and author, discussed how to research a property using the County Recorder's office. She used the Lake Mansion as an example and explained how she traced its ownership using copies of land records and documents.

February 25, 2009: Reno Now and Then

Historians and photographers Jerry Fenwick and Neal Cobb presented their photographic comparisons of Reno through the ages and recounted their experiences while writing and photographing their new book, Reno Now and Then.

January 28, 2009: The Style Tells the Story

Mella Rothwell Harmon, Curator of History at the Nevada Historical Society and an architectural historian presented a slide show on how architecture reflects broad social trends and local community values. The program looked at Reno's history through the lens of its architectural heritage.

November 19, 2008: The Lincoln Highway

Jim Bonar, President, Nevada-Sierra Chapter of The Lincoln Highway Association presented a slide show of a collection of photos from 1913-1920 on the Lincoln Highway across the U.S., with special focus on the journey across Nevada.

October 22, 2008: UNR Oral History Program

Tom King of the University of Nevada Oral History Department lead us through the archive of the Oral History Department and spoke on behalf of the importance of the Oral History Program.
