Preserving Truckee Meadow's Past through Education, Advocacy, and Leadership

Board Meeting - February 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The HRPS Board wants to thank our many members who responded to the recent renewal mailing. Our membership now tops 600 and we are still seeing renewals trickle in.

The month of February put the HRPS leadership in planning mode for 2010:

  • HRPS tour leaders met to create the schedule for tours. A full schedule is planned for May, July and September. A Children’s Tour will be slotted for 2010, the popular Bricks and Stones walk will be back and we are working on creating the Downtown Church Tour.
  • The HRPS Board scheduled its annual Strategic Planning session for March. This allows the Board to consider significant issues that often get overshadowed in the day-to-day operation of our organization.

Community Involvement:

  • Preservation Awards – HRPS will again be involved in the celebration of the City of Reno's Historical Resources Commission Awards. The lunch is scheduled for May 12th at McKinley Arts Center and we will be able to open this event to friends of historic preservation in this larger venue. The site was chosen since it’s the location of a new exhibit about the Powning Addition.
  • HRPS is now on Facebook! Join our friends today!

Projects and Walking Tours:

  • Home Tour: The Home Tour has been pushed back to September (probably 25th) to give more time for planning this new event. We continue to welcome anyone interested in serving on the committee or who has suggestions; call Sharon at 843-3823.
  • If you’re near Mt. Rose School, stop in and look at the display case which focuses on the Mt. Rose School's Centennial Celebration. HRPS provided funding to support this work and the contents of the exhibit should change periodically. There will be a brief presentation about this project at a future Monthly Program.
  • Student Education Project: Jerry Fenwick created a 30 minute presentation on old Reno schools for Roy Gomm Elementary 1st graders. The class loved it and the Education Committee will offer this to other schools as requested. The Committee is also planning to share its presentation at a monthly program in fall, 2010.
